what is a ceramic coating?

A ceramic coating works by creating a chemically bonded layer of protection on the surface of your vehicle's paint. This layer is typically made of silicon dioxide (SiO2) or other ceramic nanoparticles suspended in a liquid carrier solution. When applied to the paint surface, the ceramic coating undergoes a curing process, during which the nanoparticles bond with the paint at a molecular level.

Once cured, the ceramic coating forms a transparent, ultra-thin protective layer that is hydrophobic (repels water) and oleophobic (repels oils). This protective layer creates a barrier between the paint and environmental contaminants such as dirt, road grime, bird droppings, tree sap, and UV rays. By repelling these contaminants, the ceramic coating helps prevent them from bonding to the paint surface and causing damage or staining.

Additionally, the ceramic coating enhances the paint's gloss and depth, giving it a slick, smooth finish that is resistant to water spots and swirl marks. It also provides UV protection, helping to prevent paint oxidation and color fading caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Overall, a ceramic coating works by providing a durable, long-lasting layer of protection for your vehicle's paint, enhancing its appearance and making it easier to clean and maintain.

How to properly maintain your ceramic coating?

So you just got your fresh ceramic coating and your ride looks better than ever but now what?

Maintaining a ceramic coating properly is essential to ensure its longevity and effectiveness in protecting your vehicle's paintwork. Here's a comprehensive list of steps to follow:

  1. Regular Washing: Wash your vehicle regularly using a pH-neutral car shampoo and a soft microfiber wash mitt or sponge. Avoid using harsh detergents or abrasive materials that can degrade the ceramic coating.

  2. Gentle Drying: After washing, dry your vehicle thoroughly using a clean microfiber drying towel or a drying aid to prevent water spots. Avoid letting water evaporate on the surface, as it can leave mineral deposits that may damage the coating.

  3. Avoid Automatic Car Washes: While some automatic car washes may claim to be safe for ceramic coatings, it's best to avoid them to minimize the risk of abrasion or damage to the coating. Opt for hand washing or touchless car washes instead.

  4. Use a Ceramic Spray Sealant: Periodically apply a ceramic spray sealant or ceramic boost product to enhance and maintain the hydrophobic properties of the coating. This helps to prolong the life of the ceramic coating and provides additional protection against water, dirt, and contaminants.

  5. Avoid Abrasive Cleaners: Avoid using abrasive cleaners, polishes, or waxes on the coated surfaces, as they can degrade the coating and compromise its effectiveness. Stick to products specifically designed for use on ceramic coatings.

  6. Remove Bird Droppings and Bug Splatter Promptly: Bird droppings, bug splatter, and other contaminants can damage the ceramic coating if left on the surface for too long. Remove them promptly using a gentle cleaner and a soft microfiber towel to prevent etching or staining.

  7. Perform Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect the coated surfaces for any signs of damage, wear, or contamination. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage and maintain the integrity of the coating.

  8. Avoid Parking Under Trees or Near Construction Sites: Try to avoid parking your vehicle under trees or near construction sites where it may be exposed to sap, pollen, bird droppings, or other environmental contaminants that can damage the ceramic coating.

  9. Professional Maintenance: Consider having your ceramic coating professionally maintained or refreshed periodically by a trained detailer. Professional maintenance treatments can help rejuvenate the coating and ensure it continues to provide optimal protection for your vehicle.

By following these steps and maintaining a regular care routine, you can maximize the life of your ceramic coating and keep your vehicle looking its best for years to come.

Ceramic Coating preparation

This is the most important part

01

Wash

The first step in preparing your vehicle for a ceramic coating is a thorough wash. This involves using a gentle car wash soap and a microfiber wash mitt to remove dirt, grime, and any surface contaminants. Paying attention to detail ensures that the surface is clean and ready for further preparation.

03

Paint Correction

Once the surface is clean and decontaminated, any imperfections in the paint are addressed through a process called paint correction. This involves using a machine polisher and various polishing compounds to remove swirl marks, light scratches, and other defects, leaving the paint smooth and flawless. Paint correction enhances the final appearance of the ceramic coating and ensures a showroom-quality finish.

02

Decontamination

After washing, the next step is to decontaminate the paint surface. This involves using a clay bar or clay mitt to remove embedded contaminants such as tar, industrial fallout, and tree sap that washing alone may not eliminate. Decontamination helps create a smooth surface for the ceramic coating to bond to, ensuring maximum effectiveness and longevity.

04

Surface Prep

After paint correction, the paint surface is thoroughly cleaned again to remove any polish residue or oils that may interfere with the bonding of the ceramic coating. This step typically involves wiping down the surface with a specialized prep solution or alcohol-based cleaner to ensure optimal adhesion.
